First ENCs for New Zealand Waters
 The first set of Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) has been released for New Zealand. A set of eleven charts for the Cook Strait (the passage between New Zealand’s North and South Islands) will provide visiting ships with important navigational information about a challenging stretch of water. Oceanography MissionOceanography data that will help scientists around the world better understand climate change are now available. The data come from the Ocean Surface Topography Mission, or OSTM/Jason-2, a spacecraft developed jointly by NASA and the French space agency. Read more

Workshop on Underwater Positioning

High Performance Satellite Navigation Service
Fugro Seastar AS has announced SeaSTAR G2. This new high performance navigation service combines the navigation satellites of both the American GPS constellation and the Russian GLONASS constellation, to produce a composite GPS/GLONASS position solution. The service utilises Fugro's own network of dual system reference stations to calculate ‘orbit and clock' errors on a satellite by satellite basis for all 50 satellites of the two global navigation satellite systems thus providing consistent decimetre level accuracy positioning on a world-wide basis. ROV Jason Tracked to Near 5000m
A Ranger Wideband USBL (Ultra-Short BaseLine) acoustic positioning system from Sonardyne International has provided impressive performance for the engineers from the Deep Submergence Laboratory of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) when it accurately tracked the Jason remotely operated vehicle (ROV) down to the seabed in 4,700 metres of water. The recent demonstration was carried out from onboard the R/V Thomas G Thompson in the Pacific Ocean off Hawaii where Woods Hole researchers regularly conduct deep ocean research cruises. Read more
